JUMP TO RECIPE

Tostones are crispy twice-fried plantains that is a perfect Latin American side dish. They are crunchy on the outside and tender on the inside. Tostones are Paleo, gluten-free, vegan and very simple to make with just 2 key ingredients – Green Plantain and oil for frying.

The green plantains are cut into 1 ½ thick pieces then fried, flattened and fried again until crispy. Usually a Tostonera gives you a perfect flattened tostone, but a wooden spatula or bottom of a glass works too. These tostones taste great with a dipping sauce of your choice or just with a simple guacamole.

What you’ll need to make Tostones

  • Green Plantains
  • Salt
  • Garlic Powder
  • Oil

How to make Tostones with step by step photos & instructions

1. Peel the plantain skin and cut it into 1-inch chunks.

2. Heat oil in a pan. Add the plantains to the oil and fry on both sides for about 2 minutes on each side.

3. Remove plantains from oil and place immediately on paper towels to absorb excess oil.

4. Press and flatten the plantains by pressing with a back of a wooden spatula or a glass. (You can also use a Tostonera if you have)

5. Fry the plantains again until golden brown and crispy.

6. Sprinkle some salt flakes and serve with Quick Avocado Crema dip or Chipotle Queso or simple Guacamole.
