JUMP TO RECIPE

This Black Bean Burger is super easy, nutritional and loaded with lots of amazing flavors. The black bean patty is crispy from outside, juicy inside and can be ready on your plate in just 20 minutes.

These delicious crispy patties are high in protein and fiber. You don’t need to add eggs or breadcrumbs to bind the patties, I used oats as the binding ingredient in my recipe which is rich in fiber. So no more crumbly burgers here.

I always make a big batch of patties and refrigerate them for up to 3 months. But both cooked or uncooked black bean burgers can be frozen. If you want to freeze raw patties, stack them individually between plastic wrap and store in a freezer safe container. Thaw for an hour and cook them to your liking. If you want to freeze cooked patties, stack them between parchment paper and store in a freezer safe container. Remove, reheat for a couple of minutes preferably on a skillet or grill.

What you’ll need to make Black Bean Burger

  • Black beans, canned
  • Quick Oats
  • Onion
  • Carrot
  • Chipotle & Roasted Garlic seasoning
  • Tamari
  • Hot sauce
  • Avocado
  • Tomato
  • Hamburger Buns
  • Lettuce
  • Cheese Slices
  • Fresh sprouts
  • Chipotle Mayo
  • Oil
  • Salt & Pepper

How to make Black Bean Burger with step by step photos & instructions

1. Drain and rinse the black beans. Remove extra moisture by blotting them with a clean kitchen towel.

2. There are two ways you could make the burgers – using a food processor or by hand.

Using a Food Processor – Add the black beans, oats, bell pepper, carrot, onion, garlic, tamari, oregano, salt, roasted garlic powder, chipotle seasoning and process until you get a crumbly texture.

By Hand – Take a mixing bowl, add the black beans and mash them with a fork. Then add oats, tamari, oregano, salt, roasted garlic powder, chipotle seasoning, finely chopped – bell pepper, onion, carrot, garlic and combine well.

3. Divide the mixture into equal parts and form into patties.

4. There are three ways you can cook the patties – bake, grill, shallow fry.

To Bake – Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Place the patties on the baking sheet and brush with oil. Bake for 10 minutes on each side, total 20 minutes or until done.

To Grill – Place the patties on an aluminum foil. Brush the patties with oil. Grill for about 5 minutes or more on each side until done.

To Shallow fry – Heat 3 tablespoons of oil in a shallow pan. Fry the patties on both sides until cooked well.

5. To assemble the burger – Layer the tomato slices, pickled onion, mashed avocado, cheese, lettuce, black bean patty and fresh sprouts in between the hamburger buns. Top with any sauce of your choice like chipotle mayo or burger sauce. Serve with sides like potato fries or chips!

Notes

  • This black bean burger patty is vegan, substitute the chipotle mayo with any other sauce of your choice while assembling the burger.
  • Make it gluten-free by using gluten-free oats and hamburgers.
  • You can substitute oats with flax seed meal.
  • Store cooked or uncooked black bean patties in a freezer safe container. Stack them between parchment paper or plastic wrap. They stay good for up to three months.
